The Benefits of Advanced Digital Imaging

Embracing advanced technology like OPG and CBCT scans isn’t just about having the latest equipment; it’s about providing you with superior care. Here are the key benefits:

  • Unmatched Precision: 3D imaging eliminates guesswork. We can map out nerve locations, measure bone density, and visualise the exact anatomy of your jaw, leading to safer and more successful treatments.
  • Enhanced Patient Comfort: Say goodbye to the gag reflex caused by traditional impression putty. Our digital scans are quick, open, and completely comfortable.
  • Reduced Radiation Exposure: Patient safety is our priority. Modern digital X-rays and CBCT scanners emit significantly less radiation than older film-based X-ray systems.
  • Superior Diagnostics: These powerful scans allow us to detect potential problems early, often before they cause any symptoms. This includes hidden cysts, infections, and abnormalities that wouldn’t be visible on a standard X-ray.
  • Better Treatment Outcomes: With detailed pre-treatment planning, procedures like dental implant placements and root canals are more predictable, efficient, and successful.
  • Improved Communication: By showing you a 3D model of your mouth, we can help you fully understand your oral health and the reasons behind our treatment recommendations.

When Do We Use Digital Imaging?

This technology is integral to many of the advanced treatments we offer at DNA Henley. We use digital imaging to plan and execute:

  • Dental Implants: To assess bone quality and precisely plan the optimal position and angle for implant placement, avoiding critical structures like nerves and sinuses.
  • Orthodontics: To get a comprehensive view of tooth positions, jaw alignment, and root structures before starting treatments like braces or Invisalign.
  • Wisdom Tooth Extractions: To accurately map the position of the wisdom tooth in relation to major nerves and the sinus cavity, making extraction safer.
  • Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics): To visualise complex root canal systems in 3D, ensuring all infected tissue is thoroughly cleaned.
  • General Diagnostic Care: For a complete oral health assessment, TMJ disorder analysis, and early detection of pathologies.

Our Digital Imaging Process: What to Expect

We’ve designed our digital imaging journey to be as simple and stress-free as possible. When you visit our Henley dental clinic for a scan, here’s how it works:
The Scan
The process is entirely non-invasive and comfortable. You will be asked to stand or sit in the scanning machine, and a rotating arm will move around your head for just a few seconds. There’s no claustrophobic tunnel or any discomfort involved.
Instant Visuals
The high-resolution images are generated and displayed on our screens within moments. There’s no waiting for film to develop, which makes your appointment faster and more efficient.
Collaborative Planning
We can immediately show you the 2D or 3D images of your teeth and jaw. This allows us to walk you through our findings, explain your diagnosis clearly, and plan your treatment together. You become an active partner in your own dental care.

Quick answers to questions you may have

Are OPG and CBCT scans safe?
Yes, they are very safe. While they use radiation, our modern digital equipment is designed to use the lowest possible dose to acquire a clear image—significantly less than traditional hospital CT scans or older dental X-ray machines. We only recommend a scan when it is clinically necessary.
Does it hurt to have a scan?
Not at all. The process is completely painless and non-invasive. You simply need to remain still for a few seconds while the machine moves around you.
How long does the scan take?
The scan itself is incredibly fast, typically taking between 10 and 30 seconds. The entire appointment for the scan is very brief and efficient.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for my scan?
No special preparation is needed. We may ask you to remove any metal objects from your head and neck area, such as jewellery, glasses, or removable dentures, as these can interfere with the image.
Why do I need a 3D scan instead of a regular 2D X-ray?
While 2D X-rays are useful, they provide a flat view and can have overlapping structures. A 3D CBCT scan gives us depth and perspective, allowing us to see your anatomy without distortion. This is essential for complex procedures where precision is paramount to success and safety.
